Nanyang Breakfast Club

Travelling Exhibition Proposal

Nanyang Breakfast Club

As part of SCCC's mission to deepen appreciation of Chinese Singaporean identity through everyday culture, The Nanyang Breakfast Club was proposed as a travelling exhibition that brings this story beyond the centre. Envisioned to run across six venues including malls, libraries, and schools from April 2025, the project aimed to extend SCCC’s Permanent Exhibition into the heart of the community through an accessible and immersive spatial experience.

For the proposal, Elnathan contributed by developing the 3D mock-ups and spatial visualisations for the travelling exhibition. Collaborating closely with the art director, he translated the proposed creative direction into detailed visual representations that communicated the intended look, visitor flow, and atmosphere of the exhibition across different venue formats. These visualisations played a key role in illustrating how the exhibition system could adapt cohesively to a range of public spaces while preserving a consistent visitor experience aligned with SCCC’s vision for community-centered storytelling.

Overview of modular exhibition layout

The exhibition space was designed as an open-concept environment made up of several stations, each offering its own interactive element and narrative experience. Rather than enforcing a fixed starting point, visitors are naturally guided through the exhibition via a stamp collection activity that encourages exploration and progression across the different zones.

A key consideration in the proposal was modularity and adaptability, allowing the exhibition system to be easily transported, assembled, and reconfigured across a variety of venue types and spatial dimensions. This approach supported the vision of creating a flexible travelling exhibition that could comfortably integrate into malls, libraries, schools, and other community spaces while maintaining a cohesive visitor experience.

The proposal brought together a series of informative and interactive stations that explored the history, culture, and everyday rituals surrounding the Nanyang breakfast experience — from the origins of kopitiam culture and breakfast preparation, to tactile activities, interactive displays, and participatory storytelling moments. Through Elnathan’s spatial visualisation work, each station was carefully translated into a cohesive 3D exhibition system that communicated not only the functionality and visitor flow of the space, but also the intended charm, nostalgia, and accessibility of the experience. His mock-ups played an important role in helping stakeholders envision how the travelling exhibition could come to life across different community venues while maintaining a strong and recognisable visual identity.
